In this first lesson, we’ll look at a basic leg trap takedown from a standing grapple. The key is to shift the attacker’s balance up and back before we step in to block their heel with our foot. Leverage is then applied to their leg as we sink and move toward their center of gravity. […]
Leg and Arm Traps
Bryan Toutoshi Griffin shares several principles of leg and arm traps that can be used to escape situations in which the attacker has a superior position. These technique examples illustrate how to effectively uproot an attacker’s balance, greatly reducing their ability to throw effective strikes. The defender is then able to escape to safety. Each technique is demonstrated from a standing, seated, and ground position- demonstrating that once the principle is understood, it can be used in limitless situations.
Lessons
2. Kneeling Leg Trap
Length: 0 minutesAuthor: Bryan Toutoshi Griffin
In this lesson we find ourselves on our hands and knees after being thrown to the ground. The attacker attempts to kick us in the ribs. This content is only available to members.
3. Seated Leg Trap
Length: 0 minutesAuthor: Bryan Toutoshi Griffin
An aggressor approaches while we are seated in a chair or bench. Carrying the same principle forward, we use the same kick from the previous lesson to off-balance the attacker. This content is only available to members.
4. Ground Leg Traps
Length: 0 minutesAuthor: Bryan Toutoshi Griffin
With our back to the ground, the standing attacker attempts to stomp down on our head with their heel. This content is only available to members.
5. Leg Trap Principle Review
Length: 0 minutesAuthor: Bryan Toutoshi Griffin
We take a final look at the leg trap principles and practice how it could even be applied as a throw counter, preventing the attacker from taking advantage of their superior standing position over us. This content is only available to members.
6. Standing Arm Trap
Length: 0 minutesAuthor: Bryan Toutoshi Griffin
We will use an arm trap to capture the attacker’s center of balance. Just as before with the leg traps, it is critical that we do not try to simply pull down to try and throw the attacker. This content is only available to members.
7. Ground Arm Trap
Length: 0 minutesAuthor: Bryan Toutoshi Griffin
We find ourselves once again on our backs with the attacker standing above us, punching down. After moving to safe space we will employ the arm trap to stop the stream of punches and guide us into the attacker’s center of balance. This content is only available to members.
8. Ground Arm Trap Variations
Length: 0 minutesAuthor: Bryan Toutoshi Griffin
Just as we explored with the standing arm trap, there may be some necessary adjustments to our defense depending on whether the attacker strikes with the front or back hand. This content is only available to members.
9. Seated Arm Traps
Length: 0 minutesAuthor: Bryan Toutoshi Griffin
The attacker attempts to grab or punch us while we are seated in a chair or on a bench. Shifting in our seat, we can capture the same arm trap and reverse the effects of his attack. This content is only available to members.
10. Arm Trap Gun Disarm
Length: 0 minutesAuthor: Bryan Toutoshi Griffin
In this final lesson we use this arm trap to disarm a handgun. Mr. Griffin also shares some considerations for firearm-specific training based on his experience in military combat. This content is only available to members.
